Today’s offering is a book. Yup, I took a photo of a book cover just for you. Because this children’s book is epic and must be shared. If I’m late to the game and you’ve already got this in your children’s libraries or book caddies then I apologise for being late to the party. In fact, if you already have Ada Twist Scientist, why didn’t you alert me to its greatness before? Why was it a random browse on Amazon trying to find something as captivating as Bedtime Stories for Rebel Girls that led me to this literary gem?
Ada Twist Scientist is a great read, telling the story of a fact loving, questioning, inquisitive little girl. It celebrates STEM subjects for girls and gives an insight into ways parents can encourage a child’s inquisitive nature, even when their need for knowledge can cause a nuisance or in Ada’s case, huge mess!
The illustrations are beautiful and I’d buy the book for that alone. The fact that the characters are black was also a natural draw as it’s always lovely to show my children people that look like them being represented in mainstream publications and the media in general. There’s a fantastic campaign highlighting the lack of diversity in the media running at the moment. It’s called The So White Project and the #SummerSoWhite collection was released this week. You might be lucky enough to spot their billboards in the UK in coming months.
I need to bulk up our book shelves, particularly books for the girls. Princess loves facts at the moment, which is why the books on rebel girls was a massive hit. We also has great success with Great Women of the World, for the same reasons. I’d love suggestions on some more books to buy though. It’s great to have finally found something that hooks princess. I’m hoping Bob will be less of a reluctant reader though if I have to work my way, patiently with her too, so be it!
What are some of our favourite reads? Books for the grown ups are welcome too!
