locs one year update before retwist

Yes I know I’ve already done a one year into my locs post but here’s another loc update. I was a bit premature with the last one as my anniversary hadn’t actually hit yet. I started my hair journey last year in September 2017. I can’t believe that those little twists turned into cute starter locs and are now resembling real, proper locs! My once unruly Twiglets are falling flat and have filled out nicely!

I have a wedding to go to this week. Last week was The King’s birthday. With these events in mind, I thought it wise to get my growth retwisted. There wasn’t even a hint of the partings from my last retwist left and I really yearned to be freshened up. As always, I gave my hairdresser free reign on what hairstyle she wanted to do. I love how creative she is and I’ve not been disappointed ever, with the loc hairstyle she comes up with.

Of course, I got to my appointment with thirty minutes to spare. Anyone who knows me, knows that being late makes me super uncomfortable so I always aim to get to places early. I’d rather chill out on the other end of my journey and gather my thoughts than rush or make othe

rs wait for me. I think it’s just good manners. As I had so much time to spare, I had a lovely video chat with my dad and then took some before photos especially for this blog post. That’s why I’m sat in the car!

A few months into my loc journey, my hair had started to puff up and really lose the length. I knew it wa all part of the process, but it was frustrating not being able to do much with my hair. It’s in the last month or so that it’s started to feel like my hair is growing down and not just building volume around each loc. I do still hope that my locs will thicken out further though as it still feels like I don’t have enough hair for my big head!

I was surprised that my hair now had enough length for this kind of style. I’m glad it did as I think it’s a pretty hairstyle for a wedding. My locs are still pretty short so this was proof that they are in fact growing. It’s also a testament for the skills of a talented loctician!

Leaving my hair in a retwist hairstyle for nearly an entire week is a challenge for me. The wedding is in sight now and I am adamant that I’ll be able to resist the itch and keep my hair up! I remember a year ago, I wouldn’t have been able to make it more than a few days so I’m getting better. I also find it easier to remember to wrap my hair at night and just generally look after my hair and my daughter’s hair that little bit more intentionally than I was, though there’s still room for improvement. That actually seems to be my motto in all parts of my life this week, including work, go figure. Maybe something about the change of season and reaching an anniversary just heralds some self-reflection?
