moving house tips

Moving into a new home is both exciting and extremely stressful. In fact, moving house is one of the most stressful experiences that we must put ourselves through. And while you might have some grand design ideas for your new property and how you’re going to put your own mark on the place, there are a few other things you need to do first!

Here you’ll find 7 things you need to do before you move into your new home. Good luck!

Check all your utilities

You’ll need to let your utility company know that you’re moving home, so that they can transfer your account to your new property. Do this a few weeks before moving day so it’s one less thing on your list. You might also need to double check what kind of utilities you’ll be paying for. For example, if your new home is heated by oil then you’ll need to find a supplier – check out emo oil for the latest prices and information – or perhaps your new home is only supplied with electricity? Do a little research and get everything ready in advance.

Find the right moving company

Don’t be tempted by a cheap price. Before you choose a removal company, make sure you do plenty of research and check out their business reviews – check out more than one review platform too! A genuine removal company will look professional and have a stellar system in place to make sure your moving day goes as smoothly as possible. If anything should go wrong, breakages etc, then they should be happy to compensate you. Make sure they’re fully licensed and have plenty of experience.

Pack an essentials bag

You won’t want to shift through loads of boxes to find your personal items. So, pack an “essentials” bag for every member of your family that contains things like, pyjamas, dressing gowns, toothbrushes and toothpaste, hairbrush, toys for the little ones, contact lens items and of course medicines.

Get the right packing materials

Broken or damaged boxes are a big no-no when you’re moving. Make sure anything you’re packing away is done so in a high quality box and is taped securely. Items like your TV, sofas etc will need to be moved professionally.

Labelling all your boxes

When you finally hit your new home, you’re going to want to find the essentials easily. I’m talking about bedding, your bathroom essentials and of course the kettle, mugs and teabags. Make sure that you label boxes clearly, so things run smoothly when you’re in.

Change your address!

With the chaos that is moving, it’s easy to forget things like magazine subscriptions or billing addresses, make sure they’re being sent to your new address, so you don’t miss out on any important mail.

Register with a new GP practice

If you’re moving out the area then take some time before you move to register with a new practice. The same applies for your dentist! If you’re not moving too far then just give them your new address.
