It’s funny, year after year, my most popular posts are those on haircare. Specifically, this list on hair salons for afro hair is googled day in and day out. They’re years old and I haven’t shared them in yonks, yet it’s obviously something people are interested in. So I thought, hey, maybe I should share some of the braided afro hair styles Princess wears. You might get some of mine too!

Afro hair styles: Royal Crown

Princess is wearing a crown, or maybe you’d describe it as a tiara today. I totally forgot it was class photo day today, but thank you Facebook mums for the nudge last night! We had to rush to wash, blow dry and plait Princess’ hair after school. Did I mention Princess absolutely hates getting her hair blowdried? We had no choice as there wasn’t time to let it air dry. Cue ten minutes of tears and screams. Joy oh joy! I try not to use heat on her head that often but it had to be done yesterday.

Her crown was inspired by a pin on Pinterest. I have a few boards where I save possible hairstyles. Princess uses it as a ‘catalogue’ to pick from, kind of in the same way you might do if you were in a hair salon. It’s cute and makes her feel invested in the process. I picked the crown hairstyle, mostly because it consisted of only 16 plaits. That was manageable at 7pm on a school night!

Creating the look

To create the look, I sectioned her hair into four. Each quarter was then parted into 4 plaits. The partings met at the top of her forehead and the nape of the neck. Pretty simple but very pretty. I might try it again but cornrow some hair extensions into the plaits so there crown is fuller. I’ve never used extensions in her hair and I don’t know if I really want to start yet. What do you think?
