Every time we go out for a meal, or even stop for a snack, I get my meal interrupted because Princess decides she needs to go on a bathroom break and it can’t wait until I finish. When I say every time, I mean EVERY single time. It’s become a running joke between me and The King. We wonder how much of my iced tea I’ll get to drink or meal I’ll eat before Princess gives me that sheepish, apologetic, puppy dog look and explains that she’s desperate to use the bathroom. I normally manage about 5 minutes. If I’m lucky. Then I’m usually in a sulk and the rest of my meal or drink just doesn’t taste as good. The moment is lost.
Sunday was special. Oh so very special. I managed to walk the length of Columbia Road Market, explore the vintage stalls at the foot of Brick Lane. wonder around looking at the street art at the mouth of the market and then follow that invisible thread which seems to lead from somewhere between my stomach and my heart, right into the queue in Kahaila Café.
You see, as much as I love exploring London with my little Mini Me and whoever else wants to come, I had the rare opportunity to walk around East London by myself and I took it. I took it and relished in every sight, smell and taste. I walked at my own pace. I ate a slice of cake without fending off small, sticky fingers from my frosting and crumb coated lips from contaminating my cold drinks.
Kahaila Café is totally child friendly. It is laid back, has super friendly staff who are happy to bring your orders to the table or comfy sofas dotted around their L-shaped seating area and more than used to the shrieks and giggles solely reserved for the under 10’s crowd. Princess would love it in here, yet I’ve never taken her, it is my oasis. My sea of calm and break from reality as well as a break from the hustle and bustle of Brick Lane, the road in which it stands.
One day, when she’s older, can pay for her own slice of cake and learn to sit for hours, content with her own company, a good book or something creative to do, she can join me. Until that day, I’ll keep this little gem of a café, where I can catch up on my work on their free wifi or just as easily escape into a good novel, quietly in the corner, on a little wooden chair enjoying the sensation of sunlight kissing my neck from the skylights and feeling blessed in the moment. It’s my creative corner, but I’ll share it with you. Just don’t tell Princess where I’ve been!

Oh my, the red velvet cake in the background looks amazing! We had some good coffee & cake on Sunday morning, but nowhere near that good.
I went for the oreo chocolate cake but have had the red velvet from Kahaila Café on a few occasions – it is out of this world delicious, and so moist!!
