Relocating our homes can be tough. There are so many considerations to keep in mind that you’ll probably regret your decision halfway through. However, if you manage to persevere then you’ll find that it can be the best decision you’ll ever make in your life, especially if you’re relocating for a reason like finding a better school for your child. We’ve moved a few times during Princess’ lifetime, the last relocation, for more space for our growing family and the time before that, to give her a better standard of living and better education.
However, what’s even tougher than moving itself is helping your children get through it. Not only will they be living in an unfamiliar location, they’re also going to find it difficult to cope with making new friends and they might feel alienated from the rest of the children because they’re too shy to meet new people.
So in order to help you out, we’ve prepared a handful of useful tips and pieces of advice that will help your child settle into their new home with ease.
Tell your kids as early as possible
It might sound like a trivial tip, but it’s actually incredibly important to tell your kids as soon as you can. This is to prepare them for the eventual move. You could tell them about the location you’re moving to, you could tell them about the choice of schools they have, the parks that nearby and so on. The earlier you tell them, the easier it will be for them to cope with the future.
We tried to include Princess in the moving process as much as possible, taking her on viewings and to explore the area, and eventually the school, before signing on the dotted line. Our relocation was to an area we’d never ventured to previously so it was extra important that she felt involved.
Help them understand why you’re moving
Another good thing to do is to let your kids know why you’re moving. Maybe it’s because you feel like the school they’re going to isn’t very good, or perhaps it’s because you need to move for the sake of your job. Whatever the reason is, you should try and be as sympathetic as possible in order to help them understand why you’re moving.
Finding the right services to help
It’s also crucial that you get the right services to help you along the way. For instance, Bekins Moving Solutions is a great removals services that you’ll find just by searching on the internet. They do specialise in certain areas, but it’s important to get the best service possible to make the entire move nice and smooth. The last thing you want is to leave behind certain items that are important to your child or to delay the move.
Help your kids stay connected with their friends
You should also think about how you can keep your kids connected with their friends. For instance, you could get them a cheap smartphone to let them use apps such as Facebook and Twitter. They’re relatively inexpensive now and it’ll help them keep in touch with friends even if they’re far away.
Our children are still too young for their own phones but I made a point of going into London and visiting old friends. We are still in touch with some on social media and that’s made things much easier for our eldest.
Get to know the other parents
It’s also a good idea to get to know the other parents in the neighbourhood. This means your kids will find more friends that are outside of their school and they might even make friends that they can walk to classes with. It helps to let your kids make new friends because they’ll be distracted and they’ll have someone they can rely on. For us, this has been hands down one of the best things we could have done.
